A very warm welcome to the newest member of the Shine Bright team, Kelly Willis, our Client Liaison Officer. Kelly joins us with a wealth of experience in early childhood education and advocacy, and shares her journey into program leadership, her personal experiences as a mom of 6, including 3 children with autism, and what excites her most about the Shine Bright role.
How did your journey into program leadership begin?
“My journey started in education and early childhood programming. I’ve always gravitated toward roles that allow me to support others, especially families. Over the years, I’ve worked in schools, churches, and nonprofits, gradually stepping into leadership positions where I could shape strategy and support staff development. I discovered how much I love leading teams and building partnerships that really make a difference.”
What excites you most about this new role at Shine Bright?
“This role lets me bring all my passions together; development, strategic planning and community connection. I’m especially excited about growing our partnerships and expanding services that support families and children with diverse needs. Shine Bright’s mission aligns so closely with my own values, and I’m thrilled to be a part of a team that’s making such meaningful impact.”
What achievement are you most proud of professionally?
“Helping to increase the annual program budget within a previous role, through careful planning and strong stakeholder relationships. It wasn’t just about numbers—it meant more programming, more families served and better support for staff. That’s the kind of impact I strive for.”
What inspires your work outside the office?
“As a mom of six, including three children with autism, I’ve been deeply involved in advocacy—especially for families navigating the foster care and special education systems. I’ve helped create foster care reform for children with special needs, and I’m passionate about giving parents the tools and voice they need.”
What do you do to unwind?
“I love spending time with my family—camping, game nights or heading to Disneyland when we can. Music is a big part of our lives too—it’s how we connect, recharge, and celebrate.”
Desert island must-haves?
“Music, for sure—it keeps me grounded. And probably a notebook and pen. I’m a planner at heart, even on a desert island!”
What’s one positive thing about autism that you wish more people were aware of?
“The perspective it provides. My kids helped me to see so many new positives because they all view the world uniquely. Each of them has a special gift, a different puzzle piece from the autism spectrum. It brought a new level of awareness, true diversity and inclusion into my life.”
