That’s why we’ve compiled this comprehensive FAQ about ABA therapy, to answer your biggest questions and help you make confident, informed decisions for your family.

How Do You Define Success in ABA Therapy?

Success is about more than just how many skills a child can check off on a list. At Shine Bright, we look for real, meaningful progress, things like helping your child communicate more clearly, connecting with others, learning new things, and handling everyday situations with more independence and confidence.

We don’t measure success by how well a child follows directions or how many tasks they complete. Instead, we focus on their ability to grow, adapt, and feel more successful in their world, at home, at school, and in their relationships. We track this progress using proven tools and regularly check to make sure your child is moving toward goals that truly matter.

Do you use ABA Punishment-Based Strategies?

No. Shine Bright does not rely on punishment-based interventions. Our approach centers on positive reinforcement, teaching alternative skills, and creating supportive environments. In rare, ethically justified cases—only with caregiver consent and safety safeguards, we may consider mild reductive strategies, but never anything aversive or punitive.

How Will You Honor My Child’s Autonomy and Consent During ABA Therapy Sessions?

We teach and respect a child’s right to say “no.” Our therapists are trained to notice and respond to both verbal and nonverbal signs of discomfort. Sessions are built around choice, shared control, and fun activities. This helps build trust and a strong therapeutic relationship from day one.

Do Your ABA Sessions Focus on Masking Behaviors or Supporting Authentic Expression?

We never teach masking. Our goal is to support your child in expressing themselves authentically and comfortably. We focus on functional communication, emotional regulation, and building skills that are meaningful, not just socially conforming.

Are You Trauma-Informed? What Does That Look Like?

Yes. Our trauma-informed approach includes establishing predictable routines, gentle and sensitive rapport-building, and assent-based intervention, which means we always seek your child’s participation and comfort before moving forward with teaching. We avoid coercive practices and never push children into situations that feel unsafe or overwhelming.

We train our clinicians to recognize when behaviors may be signs of stress or trauma, not just “noncompliance,” and to respond with care. Our strategies are relationship-centered, always putting safety, trust, and emotional regulation first, before any instruction ever begins.

How Often Do You Update Parents on Progress?

You’re not just informed, you are part of the team. We believe in open, ongoing communication with families because your input is essential to your child’s success.

We provide weekly updates, hold monthly progress meetings, and offer flexible check-ins and parent training based on your preferences and schedule. You’ll always know what we’re working on, how your child is doing, and what’s coming next. If something’s not working, we’ll adjust together, because this is a shared journey and your voice matters.

Do You Work with Other ABA Therapy Providers Like SLPs, OTs and Teachers?

Absolutely. With your permission, we maintain regular communication with your child’s entire support team to ensure consistent strategies, promote progress and prevent any conflicting approaches.

How Are Shine Bright RBTs Trained and Supervised?

Our RBTs complete a rigorous onboarding process rooted in our clinical model, including extensive, hands-on training to ensure they’re fully prepared before working with children. Our methods combine two research-backed approaches, Personalized System of Instruction (which allows trainees to learn at their own pace and demonstrate mastery) and Behavioral Skills Training (which includes modeling, roleplay, and real-time feedback).

They receive frequent in-the-moment coaching, regular support from their supervising BCBAs (more than what’s required by national standards) and ongoing professional development in relationship-building, consent-based care, and advanced behavior science. This means your child’s therapy team is not only well-trained but constantly learning and growing to provide the best possible support.

What’s Your Staff Turnover Rate?

We invest heavily in staff development, culture, and alignment. Our turnover is well below the industry average, and we view our team as our greatest asset. Consistency and longevity are key to therapeutic success, and we actively support our team’s well-being and career growth.

Will my Child Have Consistent ABA Therapists?

Yes. Your child will have a stable, dedicated team, usually 2–4 RBTs, supervised by a consistent BCBA. We minimize changes unless necessary to ensure continuity of care.

What Happens if My Child Says “No” or Refuses a Task?

We see refusal as communication, not defiance. It’s a chance to pause, reflect, and adjust. We may offer more choices, simplify tasks, or revisit the activity later. Our goal is cooperation, not compliance.

Do You Offer Natural Environment Teaching (NET) or Play-Based Sessions?

Yes! Learning through play and everyday activities is a big part of how we teach. Natural Environment Teaching (NET) means we help your child build important skills during real-life moments, like playing a game, getting dressed, or having a snack.

This approach helps children stay engaged, makes learning more meaningful, and helps them use what they learn in the places and situations that matter most, at home, in school, and in daily life. Our goal is to make therapy feel fun and natural, and connected to your child’s world.

What if My Child Gets Upset or Dysregulated During an ABA Therapy Session?

Our therapists are trained in de-escalation and co-regulation. If a child is distressed, we pause demands and help them return to calm before continuing. We also review the data to learn how to reduce distress in the future.

Do You Consider Eye Contact or Sitting Still as ABA Therapy Goals?

No. We never require eye contact or stillness as standalone goals. We focus on functional behaviors that help your child succeed in their environment, not arbitrary social norms.

Do you Withhold Toys, Snacks, or Breaks During ABA Therapy?

No. We do not use deprivation as a behavior strategy. Reinforcers may be part of learning trials, but access to basic needs, emotional support, and breaks are always honored.

What Does a Typical Shine Bright ABA Therapy Session Look Like?

Every session is tailored to your child’s unique needs and energy for the day. A typical session begins with rapport-building and checking in with the child’s regulation and preferences. We mix NET (Natural Environment Teaching, which means learning through play and real-life activities), structured teaching (e.g., DTT, or Discrete Trial Training, a clear and focused way to teach specific skills in short steps), relational frame activities (which help build flexible thinking and language), and breaks based on learner motivation. RBTs use real-time cues from the child to guide prompts and make corrections in the moment. Each session stays flexible and keeps things practical; focused on skills that matter most to the child.
