Interviews are weird. You’re trying to show who you are, what you know, and why you care all while staring at a webcam and hoping your Wi-Fi holds up.
Whether you’re newly certified or a seasoned BCBA looking for a new opportunity, prepping for an interview can feel a bit overwhelming. At Shine Bright, we’ve interviewed a lot of clinicians, and we’ve learned that the best ones aren’t always the flashiest or most rehearsed. They’re the ones who are prepared, thoughtful, and real.
Here are five tips that will help you stand out in the right ways.
Be Yourself (Seriously)
We’ve seen the resumes. We get the acronyms. What we’re listening for is you. Tell us what lights you up about this work. What’s a moment with a client that changed your perspective? That speaks volumes more than a list of buzzwords.
Know Your “Why”
This isn’t about having a polished mission statement. It’s about understanding what drives you in this work. Why did you choose this field? What keeps you going? What’s been your biggest moment of growth as a BCBA?
We’re looking for people who are passionate about what they do—and who want to keep learning, growing, and showing up for kids and families.
Take It Further:
Instead of saying, “I like helping people,” try something like:
“When a parent told me their child said ‘I love you’ for the first time, I knew I wanted to do this work forever.”
Ask Questions That Actually Matter
A great interview goes both ways. You’re not just here to impress us, we want to make sure we’re the right fit for you.
Ask about our supervision structure. Ask what mentorship looks like at Shine Bright (hint: Dr. Moore is hands-on, and our team culture is built on support). Ask how we collaborate, how we handle challenges, and how we help our clinicians grow.
If you’ve had a job where support was lacking, tell us. We’re here to change that.
Be Honest About What You Know
We don’t expect perfection. What we do value is honesty and self-awareness. If you’re new, say so. If you haven’t done much parent training but you’re eager to learn, great! If you’ve had some tough experiences in previous roles, we want to hear how you handled them and what you took away.
At Shine Bright, we meet you where you are. And then we help you grow.
Take It Further:
If you haven’t led parent training yet, say:
“I’ve observed several parent sessions and would love mentorship to lead my own. I’m confident with rapport and behavior plans but still growing in coaching families.”
That kind of self-awareness shows both initiative and teachability.
Show That You Care About the Work
That doesn’t mean you have to cry in the interview (although, hey—it happens). But if you care about getting things right, supporting families, and doing work that actually makes a difference, let that come through.
We’re not a box-checking kind of company. We’re a “let’s build something meaningful” kind of company. If that’s your energy, you’re going to fit right in.
Final Thoughts
Interviews don’t have to feel like interrogations. At Shine Bright, we see them as conversations. We want to know who you are, how you think, and how we can support your goals, because the truth is when you grow, our clients grow.
So take a deep breath. Show up as yourself. And if you’re ready to work somewhere that puts people first (staff and clients), we’d love to hear your story.
A few practical things to prep:
– Know your 3–5 client populations/settings you’ve worked in
– Be ready to explain how you run supervision
– Have 1 challenge and 1 proud moment to share
– Know what kind of support helps *you* thrive
– Bonus: ask us how we support that here
